ANNOUNCEMENT
May 18, 2014: There have been some issues with this website for me recently, not least of which is that fact that it is no longer accessible through the secure network that I use 99% of the time. I am working to remedy this, but I might have to end up moving to another blog site. Please bear with me, I'll fix this soon!

Today's smile comes to us from an awesome dad writing about why boys should watch princess movies.
"Boys need to learn that watching a movie about princesses does not necessarily mean you want to be a princess. Putting yourself in a woman’s shoes does not make you less of a man. It makes you more of a person."
Definitely worth the read. http://www.womenyoushouldknow.net/proud-dad-two-geek-girls-talks-boys-princesses/

This story is a few days old, and so some of you may have stumbled upon it yourself. All too often, we hear stories of police officers that make us laugh, or even cringe. What we hear far less frequently are stories of officers doing something truly kind, but that's just what Officer Gaetano Accera did last week in Sumter, South Carolina.

This is a nerdier post than most I've ever offered up, but I couldn't resist! As someone who took my fair share of research analysis courses in undergrad and read far more scholarly studies than I can remember, I am always troubled by the way the media interprets and reports on studies, not to mention the conclusions that many studies themselves come to.
CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION, PEOPLE!
It's important that just about any data can be put in a graph and made to look like the two variables go hand in hand. Here is an awesome series of examples! Click the photo for more.

For the most part, I try to avoid posting super personal things, because I recognize that what makes me so happy about them is something that is so specific to me. Today I have to break that rule and say that what makes me really happy is my dad :) It's his birthday today and so I remember today, as every day, how incredibly luck to have such a phenomenal role model in my life.
I love you, Dad.

Today I would like to lift up, for your recognition, the honest and authentic words of two women. These two speeches, given by Gabourey Sidibe and Amy Schumer at the Ms. Gala last week offer two different takes on independence, self-confidence, and empowerment. Both of these speeches are at times light, at times heart-breaking, and both will make you think.
I recommend that you take the time to read them both in full.

Daniel Franzese, who immortalized the character of Damien in Mean Girls ten years ago came out yesterday in a beautiful letter to his former character. I really appreciated his letter and have opted to share it here in its entirety, to ensure that it gets read.
Dear Damian
It’s been a long time since our last encounter. Ten years to be exact.
I was twenty-six; you were sixteen. You were proud of who you were; I was an insecure actor. You became an iconic character that people looked up to; I wished I’d had you as a role model when I was younger. I might've been easier to be gay growing up.
You WERE beautiful in every single way and words couldn’t bring you down.
What you may not know…
When I was cast in the role of “Damian” in ‘Mean Girls,’ I was TERRIFIED to play this part. But this was a natural and true representation of a gay teenager - a character we laughed with instead of at. (You can thank Tina Fey and Mark Waters for that. I can only take partial credit.)
When we first made this movie, I’m not sure any of us knew how loved and quoted this movie would become. You certainly hope when you pour your heart into something, that people will respond - but to paraphrase Gretchen Wieners, “we can’t help it that we’re so popular.”
So, why the hell did it take me so long to come out of the closet?
Here’s why:
When I first became an actor, I wanted to play lots of roles - Guidos, gangsters and goombahs were my specialty. So, would I be able to play all of those parts after portraying a sensitive, moisturizing, Ashton Kutcher-loving, pink-shirt-wearing kid? I was optimistic. Hollywood? Not so much. I was meeting a "gay glass ceiling" in casting.
For example:
One time I wanted to audition for a supporting character in a low-budget indie movie described as a “doughy, blue-collar lug of a guy.” The role was to play the husband of an actress friend of mine who I had been in two movies and an Off-Broadway play with. She and I had even moved to L.A. together.
I figured I was perfect for it.
They said they were looking for a real “man’s man.” The casting director wouldn’t even let me audition. This wasn't the last time this happened. There were industry people who had seen me play you in Mean Girls but never seen me read in an audition but still denied me to be seen for “masculine” roles.
However, I did turn down many offers to play flamboyant, feather-boa-slinging stereotypes that always seemed to be laughed at BECAUSE they were gay. How could I go from playing an inspirational, progressive gay youth to the embarrassing, cliched butt-of-a-joke?
So, there it was. Damian, you had ruined my life and I was really pissed at you. I became celibate for a year and a half. I didn’t go to any gay bars, have any flings and I lied to anyone who asked if I was gay. I even brought a girl to the ‘Mean Girls’ premiere and kissed her on the red carpet, making her my unwitting beard.
It wasn’t until years later that grown men started to coming up to me on the street - some of them in tears - and thanking me for being a role model to them. Telling me I gave them comfort not only being young and gay but also being a big dude. It was then that I realized how much of an impact YOU had made on them.
Meanwhile, I was still in the closet. Deleting tweets that asked if I was gay, scrubbing IMDB Message Boards for any indication, etc. (It’s important to note that I was actually DISCOVERED singing in a Florida gay bar by casting director, Carmen Cuba, for my first role in Larry Clark’s ‘Bully.’)
I had the perfect opportunity in 2004 to let people know the REAL Daniel Franzese. Now in 2014 - ten years later - looking back, it took YOU to teach me how to be proud of myself again. It’s okay if no one wants to sit at the table with the “art freaks.” Being a queer artist is one of my favorite things about myself. I have always been different and that's rad. People have always asked if I was really gay? While my reps usually lied to protect me. My friends and family all knew the truth but now it's time everyone does. Perhaps this will help someone else. I had to remind myself that my parents named me Daniel because it means "God is my judge" So, I’m not afraid anymore. Of Hollywood, the closet or mean girls. Thank you for that, Damian. (And Tina.)
By the way…in June I am the Celebrity Grand Marshall of the Portland Gay Pride Parade.
so…
We go Glen Coco.
With love and respect,
Daniel Franzese
P.S. I hate it when people say I’m “too gay to function.” I know you do, too. Those people are part of the problem. They should refrain from using that phrase. It really is ONLY okay when Janis says it.

Billy on the Street is the clever vehicle for comedian Billy Eichner (who you may recognize from his reoccurring role on Parks and Recreation). The premise of his show is that he runs around New York screaming pop quiz trivia and just generally pulling shenanigans on people walking around. In a recent web exclusive, he takes the fabulous Amy Poehler out in a Pitbull mask to shock passers-by. Take a look.

Today marks the 20 year anniversary of the when All That first aired. For those of you who weren't old enough, young enough, or alive for that to mean anything to you, All That was a sketch comedy show for kids, starring kids, on Nickelodeon. This wonderful show allowed for a common language for my friends and I to speak to each other. It was one of the first pieces of common pop culture that I could remember quoting and acting out on the playground day after day with all of my friends.
But All That was also wonderful in the very way it was constructed, ways that went over the heads of 90%-100% of its viewers, but were ground-breaking nonetheless.
"All That consciously rejected family-friendly standards. It was messy and irreverent—a show unapologetically written for kids, not their parents. And in that regard, it remains truly one-of-a-kind."
Today, The Atlantic website features a wonderful piece on All That, complete with links to a couple wonderful skits. Click the image above to check it out!

In the fall, a good friend of mine from high school and I were talking about painting our nails, and comparing designs, when she suggested we start a blog. Knowing that my younger sister is also incredibly artistic and inclined toward such a thing, I asked her to join us. I'm sure we don't have many followers (but, as I've learned here on Everyday Enchantment) sometimes you don't do it for the followers, you do it for yourself.
This nail blog has given me the kick in the butt I need to try and find new and fun things to do with my nails and take some time from my busy schedule to do something for myself. It's been really lovely, and I'd encourage you to check it out.

My walk to and from work each day takes me about 20 minutes, each way. Every now and then I try to mix up the route a little so that I see new things, but no matter which way I go, I almost invariably see Amber. Amber is a beautiful, blonde-colored husky belonging to a family only a block or so from where I live. She is an incredibly sweet dog, and I often see passers-by stopped to talk to her and pet her through the fence.
Yesterday, I saw a friend from University of Chicago posted that Amber had passed away and that her owners had posted a letter from Amber outside, thanking all the people who stopped to pet her. Today, on my way to work, I saw that letter, along with a large, white board, covered in blank paper and pens, for people to share memories and condolences with Amber's family.
Such a beautiful gesture. It's always nice to be reminded that sometimes, the things that make us smile can be right in our own backyard.

Usually I try to keep variety in the types of things that I share, but today I have to break my own rule! Richard Renaldi recently finished a series of photos called "Touching Strangers". His goal was to take portraits of complete strangers intimately posed and always touching. I had to share this because it has been compared to the recent viral video "First Kiss" that asked strangers to kiss, only to later admit that all of the subjects were models and that the video had been made to advertise a clothing line.
Unlike the "First Kiss video" Renaldi sought to create something true and real, that meant including discomfort. He paired people who differed in age, gender, race, sexual orientation, and other ways to speak more genuinely to the experience. Read more and see more pictures by clicking the photo above.

Edith Macefield was an Oregon native who was offered $1 million to relocate so that a developer could continue their plans to build a mall. Instead, they were forced to build around her, and her house and her story may have been the inspiration for the film Up.
Edith fostered an unexpected friendship with construction supervisor, Barry Martin, and left her house to him when she passed away. Instead of selling the land to the developers, he has opted to sell it to a man who seeks to "preserve Edith's spirit of resistance".

Though I was never able to catch his show, Totally Biased, every night of its most recent incarnation, I have always had a tremendous amount of respect for W. Kamau Bell. He is the subject of my blog today because of his attitude towards topics that have proven tough to talk about in the media today, transgender issues. It has become increasingly clear that even the most well-meaning of public figures can find their foot in their mouth; Bell has been one of them. The difference, for Bell, is accepting that he is NOT the authority and seeking to learn from his mistakes, rather than becoming defensive,
“I think that’s what happened with Jared Leto. There was a sense, you felt like, when somebody challenged him on it he was like, ‘No, no, no. I know.’ For me, that’s the place I want to be clear about. I will lead a race discussion because I feel pretty solid about that, but if there’s a transgender person in the room, I’d like to pass the mic to them.”
ometimes, it can really be that simple, acknowledge that you are not the authority and seek to learn from your mistakes. We could all learn from that.

Nash coined the term "agapic energy" to express the feelings and strategy of the Civil Rights Movement, as she experienced it. Stemming from a love of humankind, agapic energy replaces nonviolence.
"A basic principle behind agapic energy is that people are not the enemy, Nash said. However, examples such as unjust political systems, unjust economic systems, racism, sexism, ignorance and emotional and mental illness are the enemy, she said."
Click the photo to read the full article in South Carolina's newspaper. Nash spoke at the University of South Carolina as part of an event hosted by Carolina Leadership Initiative, my brother's organization.

Today's entire post will be dedicated to something that made me incredibly happy today and will, no doubt, continue to make me very happy: The Veronica Mars Movie!
As someone who's been a hugely dedicated fan of the show for years now, I have been closely following the news of the movie; from its start on Kickstarter to production and finally to anxiously awaiting its release. We had just finished watching the entire series (only 3 seasons), because he had never seen an episode, and it had been a while since I had watched more than one or two. The movie was flawless. It had everything I could have asked for, and even left the ending open for a possible sequel *fingers crossed*
For bonus fun, here's a list of ten awesome easter eggs and references throughout the film that will make any Marshmallow smile! ALERT: List contains some spoilers, don't read until after viewing the movie.

Today, I want to highlight an American clothing company called BetaBrand. My plug for them is in light of a recent decision they made for their most recent ad campaign. Rather than hire models to photograph for their spring collection, they contacted friends and relatives, seeking real women with graduate level degrees. The results are pretty great!

Obituaries are generally no cause for smiles, but this one is a little different. Walter George Bruhl Jr. (of Newark, DE. by the way!) wrote his own obituary before he passed away and included some very sweet touches. I stumbled upon this on a blog that I like to read and thought I would pass it along. Please read it all the way through, it has a very sweet ending!

You may or not be aware of a story that began a few months ago, when Dr. Thomas Ogletree, a pastor in the United Methodist Church officiated a wedding between his son and another man. According to the UMC Book of Discipline gay marriage is not to be recognized, and Dr. Thomas Ogletree was set to be punished as the Bishop of the UMC saw fit. Today, something rather remarkable happened.
The Bishop dropped the case.
The Bishop dropped the case.
"And he didn’t just drop them, either. He turned them into a huge brass bell he used to ring what will likely be remembered as the death knell of the anti-gay policy of the largest mainline Christian denomination in the world."
-John Shore

Many of you know that I'm an enthusiastic supporter of the community project, PostSecret. Their website posts anonymous secrets that people have sent in on postcards and allows people support and an outlet for things that they can't share with other people in their life. I have often shared secrets on my blog.
This week, they ran an animated short film with secrets that people shared out loud, at PostSecret events, and I would like to share that with you here.

Today, I would like to share an open letter that I stumbled upon in my daily combing of my daily blog-checks. This love letter, written by Meghna Sridahar for Amherst College's independent newspaper, The Amherst Student, spoke to me and touched me so deeply that I have shared it with several women in my life.
Here is an excerpt from "A Love Letter to Anxious Ladies",
Here is an excerpt from "A Love Letter to Anxious Ladies",
"Dear anxious ladies, do not ever feel invalid, isolated, frustrated with the depths of your own anxiety, or alone. Do not feel frustrated because you are too strong willed, too hopeful, too full of dreams and aspirations, too full of caring and opinions, too full of worries and demands of yourself, to be able to be the perfect subject of capitalist competition, of the job market, of the demanding academic culture or of the demeaning hetero-patriarchy. Do not feel that you have shown weakness in your anxieties: by contrast, you have shown incredible strength and resilience, because you are too infinite and uncontainable to be fit into the narrow categories the social order demands of you, and anxiety is just your reflex resistance to the status quo trying to accommodate you within it. Do not feel alone, or like a freak, or a hopeless case: we are increasingly becoming the norm, and we are becoming the norm because there is an increasing body of resistant and strong women who, pulled between contradictory and forceful demands in the current oppressive social order we inhabit, chose not to surrender quietly. Do not ever feel invalid, because your emotions and sensitivities take over you at moments nobody else considers important, and because they cripple you from action: celebrate, instead, the capacity to care so strongly, to feel so much, because it constitutes a part of your empathy, of your thoughtfulness about the place in the world around you, of your incredible selflessness in your instinctive placement of your worries and values above your own self-preservation."
Please read the letter in its entirety here http://amherststudent.amherst.edu/?q=article%2F2014%2F03%2F05%2Flove-letter-anxious-ladies and share it with women in your life!

Today, I share a story to restore your faith in humanity. An Austin Dentist has spent the last year providing free dental reconstruction to a man who was a victim of a hate crime while visiting Austin for Pride. Here is an excerpt from the story,
"Cash said he did the procedure for free because Austin has given so much to him in the three years the Detroit native has lived here.
'People have been so warm and welcoming to me here. I figured that's not the way someone should be treated from out of town,' said Dr. Cash.
The dentist also says that the Victim’s Relief Fund helped to pay for a huge portion of the work which would cost six figures."

Today I am going to recommend two wonderful music podcasts that make me smile.
The first is called Song Exploder and features musicians breaking down a song track by track and talking about the writing process. It's an awesome way to learn music and get a new perspective on old songs.
The second is called StageDive and allows artists to tell stories, either about the music industry or more personal in nature, and scores it solely with music by that artist/group. The episodes are all nice and short, but they have some pretty fun stories!
Check out both for something fun and different!

A few weeks ago, the son of a very good friend of my father's was found, beaten to death, in New Jersey. This is a horribly tragic event, and obviously no part of it makes me happy. What does give me a little peace is the amount of love and support that the community has poured out in the wake of this horrendous event. Men in tutus make me happy. Today I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon with my mom (and 25,000 other people). This is a race that makes me very happy. For one thing, it's overwhelmingly attended by female runners, which is awesome. For another, the men who are there are often decked out as princesses (or princes to their princess) and everyone is just so happy and excited to be there. Not to mention the awesome signs that spectators bring! For example, some signs I saw included:
- "Dear Stranger, don't give up. You're almost there."
- "Run like Channing's at the finish line."
- "Your feet may hurt, but your ass looks great."

If you are a football fan, or watch the news, you have probably heard of this man. Michael Sam, defensive end for Missouri State. Senior Michael Sam came out as gay last week and a flurry began. Sam apparently came out to his teammates and coaches in the fall and played out his senior season with their respect and support. In the wake of his public announcement, there has been some disheartening comments that this revelation about his sexuality may hurt his chances of being drafted into the NFL, with many news outlets reporting that anonymous sources at various teams offering a plethora of week excuses as to why Sam's presence on the team may cause a "distraction".
Official comments have been significantly more positive. ThinkProgress posted all of the official comments made thus far by coaches, owners, and players, and the result just may put a smile on your face. While most of the comments by team coaches and executives are pretty boiler plate, and may, unfortunately, just be an attempt to cover their butt come the draft, many comments were significantly more positive. Tweets by NFL players expressed their love and respect for Sam's courage and wished him the best of luck, like this one from Seattle linebacker and Super Bowl MVP, Malcolm Smith,

The New Orleans Saints (my favorite team) has not made an official comment yet, but has expressed continued interest in drafting Sam, as confirmed by his agent. And for my Dad, who bleeds Eagles green, an anonymous source at the team has been quoted as simply saying, "Why would it change anything?".

Yesterday, a dear friend of mine shared with me a wonderful article that was published by a young photographer on her blog. Andrea Mabr was involved in photographing the much-needed and long-overdue renovations of the Circle Food Store in New Orleans.
Many people remember the iconic structure that became famous in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. During my time living in New Orleans' Seventh Ward, my house was just down the street from the abandoned Circle Food Store. I drove past it twice a day on my commute to and from work.

Anyone who knows me knows that one of the most important and lasting sources of smiles in my life is music. Hearing a song that you really connect with and feel understood by can be a deeply profound and joyous experience. Something that makes me even happier is getting to see musicians be truly happy and in love with what they're doing.

Hollaback is a movement around the world to end street harassment. As a woman, I have absolutely experienced being cat-called or asked for my number. It is something that happens with such frequency that we start to take it for granted as something that cannot be avoided.
Hollaback provides a forum for women to get together and share their experiences, offer support, and speak about how they are feeling.
Here is an excerpt from their site:
"Dedicated to fighting street harassment, Hollaback! has empowered people in over 70 cities and 24 countries internationally to respond through a smartphone/web application. Users are encouraged to speak up when they see harassment by quickly documenting it in a short post (photo optional) and sharing it to a publicly viewable map. Anyone browsing the stories on the Hollaback! maps immediately understands 3 things:
1) If you’ve been harassed, you’re not alone,
2) Street harassment is used to exert control over others by making them feel scared or uncomfortable. It is much more than individuals just acting inappropriately.
3) There are street harassment “hotspots” in most cities often centered around high pedestrian traffic areas.
Hollaback! provides comfort to those harassed, and proof that street harassment is a serious problem warranting a serious response from policy makers."

"A year ago, North Carolina's governor, Pat McCrory, threatening cuts to UNC's flagship campus at Chapel Hill, said, "If you want to take gender studies that's fine, go to a private school and take it." McCrory's statement suggests that the public university is a place for training rather than for real thinking and questioning, that such questioning is not relevant for public-university students, for first-generation college students—that such students need not worry about imagining their lives because their lives have already been imagined for them."

Chris Kluwe
As we enter a new year, new controversies are sure to arise. In contrast to last year's NFL controversy over hazing and bullying by Miami Dolphin's Richie Incognito, this story will warm your heart.
Chris Kluwe was starting punter for the Minnesota Vikings until he was let go recently. The reason why, according to an open letter he recently sent to DeadSpin, was his support of equal marriage rights. In an interview with NPR, Kulwe, a straight man, was asked why marriage equality is so important to him. Here is his response:

This list of "24 Rules for Being a Human in 2014" from ThoughtCatalogue.
1. Learn to be okay with not being okay.
2. Learn to have conversations that do not consist of lambasting someone else, especially when that someone is you.
3. Give the most kindness to those who seem like they least deserve it.
4. Learn to define and describe people without initially reaching for their sex or appearance as key adjectives.
5. Realize that perspective determines everything.
6. Understand that when something upsets you, it’s striking a nerve of truth.
7. Understand that when someone upsets you, the best thing to do is understand where they’re coming from.
8. Know that no matter how far you’ve come, there’s no point at which it’s appropriate to remain sedentary.
9. Be radically, sincerely honest. Be shocked at how deeply you can connect with people when you are.
10. Know that if you want to have a conversation about something that upsets you, insulting someone is only the by-product of your own defenses, and will ultimately raise theirs as well, not open lines of understanding and communication.
11. Realize that selflessness is one of the most predominantly wonderful qualities a person can have.
12. Learn to actually feel happy for other people.
13. Go into everything with the knowing that you don’t know it all, and that every experience is valid.
14. Invest in extra linens, donate what you don’t use, and keep extra Tylenol on you because people tend to need it and be without it rather frequently.
15. Call your siblings more.
16. Be present in what’s at hand. You owe it to the people in your life and to the things you’ve built for yourself.
17. Understand that letting go and moving on means very humbly and slowly gesturing in the direction of which you’d like to reach.
18. Get dressed everyday, just for yourself.
19. Give better goodbyes.
20. Carve out time to do nothing but be with yourself.
21. Boldly make yourself your first priority. You’ll do everything better when you do.
22. Stop shaming yourself for doing things that are perfectly, normally human, but happen to be deemed imperfect in society.
23. Read. A lot.
24. Reach out to people, open your heart, and watch how eagerly they jump in and do the same.

Anyone that knows me can tell you that I'm a dog person, and always have been. I'm also a huge proponent of adopting shelter dogs rather than going to breeders, so what's making me happy today should come as no real surprise. Today was when the last paper issue of The Onion was slated to be released. Which is not, in and of itself, a happy thing. The Onion is a wonderful satirical paper, and will continue to produce wonderfully snarky stories, but seeing it shift entirely out of print media was undoubtedly sad. What did make me happy was the cross city adventure that my boyfriend and I took to snag copies of this piece of history.
We spent a better part of our afternoon on the quest, part of which looked like us driving around scouring the sidewalks and stopping at every box we saw. The first box we went to was empty, the second was full of trash, the third had only old copies and so on. Eventually we found an intersection with three separate boxes and the third one had the final issue.

Last night I joined many others around the world in tears and sadness at the loss of such a great man. What is making me happy today is not this loss, but acknowledging and remembering the life that this great man lived.
"Today, he has gone home. And we have lost one of the most influential, courageous, and profoundly good human beings that any of us will share time with on this Earth. He no longer belongs to us – he belongs to the ages." -President Barack Obama
One of the most beautiful and compelling pieces I read following his death is the one from which the photo above was taken. Focusing on Madiba's humanity, flaws, and imperfections, it paints a picture of who this great man was, and encourages us to remember that he was a great man not despite, but because of these shortcomings.

Today I was out for a run on Lakefront Trail and it occurred to me that running has been something that helps me transition into and develop a familiarity with affinity for the space around me. When I lived to New Orleans, I loved running in City Park and in Cape Town I loved running at Rondebosch Commons. When I'm blessed with spaces like these, no wonder I find it trying to run on a treadmill or indoor track!

Southport Lanes.
Today's "what's making me happy" is very specific to Chicago, but it's too much of a gem not to be shared. Southport Lanes is a bar and bowling alley on the North Side of Chicago. There may be only four lanes, but what it lacks in numbers it makes up in personality.
None of the lanes are mechanical. You keep score with a pencil and paper and the pins are even reset by a person behind the scenes. This means that if you throw a lot of gutter balls (like this gal does) they may take pity on you and roll it back, or even help you to get a strike...by knocking your pins down for you.
